Family Photoshoot at Cornelia Fort Airpark

In December I had the opportunity to work with the Adams Family. When mom asked me to recommend some locations for her and her family’s first portraits since the birth of their youngest daughter, Rosemary, Cornelia Fort Airpark was at the top of my list.

Cornelia Fort Airpark is tucked away in the middle of East Nashville and is one the hidden gems of the city. The airport itself operated from 1945 until 2011, and was converted to a public park in 2014. The original control tower and airplane hangars are still standing and make for unique backdrops. The open, well-kept runways and open fields provide space and creativity for a multitude of shots.

The open spaces of Cornelia are perfect for families with young kids. Because it was a cold day, I wanted to find ways to keep the family moving as much as possible to try and stay warm. The oldest Adams siblings brought all their energy and wanted to frolic every chance they got. As soon as I saw them hop out of their car they sprinted straight to the playground! To warm them up to taking pictures (literally and figuratively) I had the kids hold hands and run with each other towards me and the camera.

The shoot was on a cold, overcast, December day. I love the lighting that overcast creates during photoshoots. No matter what direction you choose to orient your subjects, you get clean light that doesn’t cast awkward shadows on the subject. Overcast also adds a “moody” vibe to the photos, which as someone whose always loved cloudy days, I love! I definitely love working with warm, golden hour light, but if most of my shoots could be on cloudy days I wouldn’t complain.

Cornelia Airpark is one of my favorite parks to shoot at because of the multiple great locations throughout that make for great spots to camp out for photos. The airplane hangars, open runways and fields of tall grass that turned into the shades of fall bring beautiful and unique textures to portraits. It was such a joy working with this family that was full of so much energy. Can’t wait to work here again soon!
